Name
19. Welcome Groups: an opportunity for early intervention and family connection
Description

To provide early intervention, Developmental Pediatrics and Rehabilitation at McMaster Children’s Hospital implemented Welcome Groups using a tiered model for families.

These groups function as a multidisciplinary team in collaboration with families to review a child’s strengths and needs, and provide recommendations in a group setting. Children and youth participate in activities focusing on motor, play, and recreation in a naturalistic setting to facilitate engagement and observation. Groups include the parent/caregiver, facilitating connection to other families and services, setting a comfortable environment to share their stories and ask questions.

Satisfaction surveys show a positive response from families. Caregivers reported that connection with other families was of the most benefit. Additional reported benefits are the opportunity to learn more about services including the benefit of recreational activities, gaining community connections, and having help navigating services.
